Lownie's masterful takedown of the former prince is not only an evisceration of Andrew's character, but also a damning indictment of the institution to which he belonged. As the author makes clear, Andrew's behavior was enabled by a monarchy that denied any accountability for his actions and afforded him every entitlement. The resulting privilege encouraged him to do as he liked, to whom he liked, when he liked, with disastrous consequences for the women whose lives he destroyed.
Pro-establishment narrative
Lownie's revelations about Andrew's behavior, coupled with his continuing downward spiral, as best exemplified by his arrest in February, demonstrate that the Royal Family is in urgent need of reform and modernization. However, that modernization is clearly progressing, with King Charles taking a rigid stand against his brother's actions. Despite this sorry episode, the U.K. is best sticking with the system it has — one which is led at the helm by a monarch prioritizing accountability and transparency in-line with the 21st century.
Cynical narrative
In the short term, Lownie's expose is a PR disaster for the Royal Family. In the long run, however, the forensic focus of the press and public eye on Andrew's moral failings may yet serve the Crown's interests by distracting attention away from the controversies and scandals of its other members. Using Andrew as a sacrificial lamb in this manner, "The Firm" could well soldier through this latest scandal, with its standing seemingly enhanced beside the ex-Duke's fall from grace.
