The Brazilian far-right agents in the U.S. are just cynically milking the spat between Moraes and Mendonça to beg Washington for punishment of a Brazilian justice. Magnitsky sanctions were imposed last year — then dropped a few months later — which says plenty about how flimsy the case was. Dragging a foreign government into Brazil's internal fights is an act of sabotage against national sovereignty.

Government-critical narrative

This isn't opportunism riding a court crisis, as the push for sanctions predates it entirely — beginning months before Mendonça's report surfaced. The evidence stands on its own: Moraes has jailed critics, censored speech and gutted due process. Sanctions were lifted in December merely because of a policy call. Because Moraes' conduct never changed, accountability demands restoring them.
