The DOJ probe into Newsom is textbook political retaliation — federal agents are knocking on doors of family friends and former employees without finding any actual crime. Trump has weaponized the Justice Department against Jerome Powell, James Comey, Letitia James and Adam Schiff, and Newsom is simply the latest target. Going after Newsom's wife makes clear this is a personal vendetta.

Newsom crying retaliation is a distraction from real scandals piling up in California. His government fought Palisades fire victims in court at every turn, violated court orders and let radical environmental policies prioritize plants over people while homes burned. A governor with this much to hide on wildfire mismanagement and fiscal incompetence has every reason to get ahead of a federal investigation.
