The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Hastert's abuse was monstrous, his prison term deserved and the apology, while given far too late, was owed. Still, a life can hold both real public service and private disgrace without one erasing the other. His long career of steady leadership steered the House through the terror attacks and delivered a prescription drug benefit millions still rely on, and that record deserves honest accounting alongside the complex and problematic aspects of his legacy.

Establishment-critical narrative

No tally of legislation passed offsets years of preying on children while preaching family values from the Speaker's chair. The same tenure gutted fiscal restraint, blessed the last 20 years of forever wars, torture and mass surveillance, then cashed out into a lobbying fortune that funded the hush money. Legacy talk is just laundering a career built on sexual predation, hypocrisy and the corrosion of public trust.
