The Spin

Pro-government narrative

Congo's Constitutional Court confirmed Denis Sassou Nguesso's landslide win with 94.90% of the vote, validating a process the African Union observer mission called free, fair and credible. The opposition was too fragmented and weak to mount any real challenge, and Congolese voters clearly chose peace, stability and continuity. This fifth term gives Sassou Nguesso a mandate to tackle corruption head-on and push economic development forward.

Government-critical narrative

An 84% turnout figure is pure fiction when civil society observers on the ground say actual turnout barely hit 10%, ballot boxes were carted off before counting, and opposition candidates had virtually no polling station representatives due to a communications blackout. Multiple voting, ballot stuffing and withheld voter cards handed to ruling party militants made this a rigged exercise from start to finish. A result built on fraud carries zero legitimacy.
