Chipotle Pulls Jalapeños Amid Salmonella Outbreak

Is this proof of recurring safety failures or evidence that its response system actually worked?

The Spin

Narrative A

Chipotle's salmonella problem is yet another reminder that this chain has a serious, recurring food safety issue. Dating back to 2015, Chipotle has racked up E. coli, norovirus and salmonella outbreaks, and a $25 million criminal fine. While its quick response should be commended, swapping out jalapeños is damage control, not a fix, and investors were right to punish the stock by nearly 10%.

Narrative B

Chipotle actually handled this outbreak the right way — its ingredient traceability system quickly flagged the jalapeños, and the chain pulled them fast enough that Minnesota health officials said they have no ongoing concerns about the restaurant. The contaminated peppers hit multiple chains, making this a supply chain problem, not a Chipotle problem.
