The Spin

Pro-China narrative

This new beef tariff is no surprise: the quota system was announced last year and rests on legitimate concerns that apply to every exporter. A longtime strategic partner of Beijing, Brazil understands China's drive to shield local producers and safeguard its own food sovereignty. Brazil remains committed to dialogue and will keep seeking access to other countries' remaining quotas, while widening its reach with alternative markets.

Anti-China narrative

China is now hitting Brazilian beef with a 67% tariff, and the Brazilian government answers with silence — saying everything about what BRICS membership actually buys and whom Lula is loyal to. That Beijing capped Brazilian beef exports at 65% of last year's volume exposes the so-called safeguard measure is protectionism wrapped in safety rhetoric. While Brazil treats China as a partner, it gets squeezed in a terrible trade strategy.
