Climate change is the undeniable force behind B.C.'s wildfire catastrophe — hotter, drier conditions have roughly doubled the likelihood of the extreme fire weather turning ordinary sparks into landscape-scale disasters. Six of Canada's worst fire seasons in a century have all hit in the last decade, and that's no coincidence. Arson investigations matter, but deliberate fires account for a tiny share of the destruction; the real culprit is a warming climate.

Blaming climate change lets the government off the hook for decades of failed forest management. The B.C. Forest Practices Board found that commercial logging in high-risk wildland-urban interface zones occurs 11 times more often than actual fuel-reduction treatments. Mechanical thinning and prescribed burns could dramatically reduce fire risk, but bureaucratic barriers keep experienced operators on the sidelines while communities burn.
