Is this a breath of fresh air for Labour or do they need to call an early election to ensure Burnham has a mandate?

The Spin

Labour Party narrative

Under Starmer's leadership, MPs lived under a sort of reign of terror where they could not express any opposition. Burnham's bid to restore the broad church approach, as well as to be more accessible, is a breath of fresh air and is the right mentality to deliver for the people of this country and make Labour successful again.

Conservative narrative

When the Conservatives were in power, Labour rightly complained that a change of leadership does not automatically give the new prime minister a mandate from the British people. Now that Labour are in charge, they're hypocritically doing the same thing. Burnham needs to call an early election to test whether the British people want him, or someone else, to lead the country.
