Barney Frank was one of the greatest legislators of his generation. He was a razor-sharp mind who helped reshape American finance with Dodd-Frank and proved that openly gay politicians could thrive at the highest levels of power. His courage in coming out in 1987 changed what was possible in public life, and his decades of fighting for civil rights, LGBTQ+ equality, affordable housing and consumer protections left a lasting mark on the country.
Frank was a model of a more nuanced and pragmatic progressivism, even warning from his deathbed that Democrats are blowing their chances by pushing social issues the public isn't ready for, from transgender sports to defund the police to open borders. The left turning fringe positions into litmus tests is exactly what hands Republicans victories, and even a liberal icon like Frank saw it clearly enough to write a whole book about it.
