The Spin

Left narrative

Brazil is right to downgrade diplomatic relations with Argentina, as Milei's insults against Lula and the country's institutions are a calculated move to advance a Trump-backed global far-right agenda. No sovereign nation should tolerate a foreign leader foolishly treating its democratic institutions like a punching bag for partisan politics.

Right narrative

The Lula government has manufactured a diplomatic crisis with Argentina to boost its standing ahead of elections, plain as day. Lula went to Argentina to pay a visit to house-arrested former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner about a year ago, and Argentina didn't escalate the situation because mature governments put national interests above political theater.
