Embedding independent evaluators inside labs, setting shared standards and buying a year or two for alignment work still delivers the cures and growth, just without gambling everything on speed.

Warning the world about doom while raising tens of billions to build the doom machine is a sales pitch, not a safety plan. Nobody floating one or two years from civilization-destabilizing systems answers that with voluntary auditors and polite industry coordination. Say the quiet part out loud — a double-digit chance of extinction — or stop pretending measured remedies match the stated stakes.
Cynical narrative
AI doomerism may be the greatest financing pitch Silicon Valley ever invented. Labs warn their products could end civilization while using that supposed inevitability to justify staggering valuations, endless venture funding and more than $1 trillion in compute commitments. Meanwhile, much of their revenue comes from VC-backed AI startups spending investors’ money on their models. Maybe "superintelligence" is less an approaching god than a story to keep the bubble financed.
