Islamabad's decision to ban the JAAC and deploy 16,000 security personnel in POJK is a desperate attempt to crush legitimate civil dissent rather than address real grievances. The government's failure to honor its own agreements on electricity prices and constitutional reforms left protesters no choice but to escalate. Labeling a grassroots coalition of traders, lawyers and students a terrorist organization only proves Pakistan treats POJK as a security asset.
The JAAC's push to scrap the 12 reserved assembly seats ignores that Kashmiri refugees living in Pakistan have legitimate political rights too. With elections already scheduled for July 27, the democratic path is wide open — street shutdowns and violence only undermine the very process that could deliver real change. Imposing an agenda through unrest rather than ballots exposes that some protest leaders have motives that go well beyond Kashmiri welfare.
