Is Hegseth defending himself against misinformation, or should he take responsibility for this illegal strike?

The Spin

Pro-government narrative

The Washington Post fabricated a dangerous narrative claiming Hegseth ordered follow-up strikes to kill survivors, one that even The New York Times contradicted. He authorized destroying the vessel and its drug cargo, not targeting shipwrecked individuals — and the disabled boat remained a legitimate military threat requiring elimination. This was just another media attack designed to undermine decisive action against drug traffickers poisoning Americans.

Government-critical narrative

That the Pentagon chief is someone who has long defended troops accused of war crimes and advocated for loosening rules of engagement creates an atmosphere where abuses occur. Hegseth's rhetoric about maximum lethality over legal constraints directly enabled the illegal killing of two survivors clinging to boat wreckage, in breach of the Pentagon's own rules. His attempt to shift blame to Adm. Bradley reveals cowardly leadership.
