The Spin

Pro-Israel narrative

Merz's statement represents how far Germany has come since the Nazi regime, and how it continues to protect Jewish Germans. While antisemitism has certainly risen since the Oct. 7 attack, and the country must work to tackle that issue, these hateful groups have not stopped Jewish life from flourishing. Jewish culture bounced back after Hitler and will remain strong in the face of any threats.

Pro-Palestine narrative

Germany should give the same state-sanctioned protection to Muslims and Palestine that it gives to Jews and Israel. If Merz is truly committed to preventing atrocities, he should stop aligning himself with the Israeli government's genocide in Palestine. The Nazi's treatment of Jews in the past should serve as a powerful reminder of our collective responsibility to oppose all forms of injustice and to uphold human rights universally — including for Palestinians today.
