The Spin

Left narrative

Alaa Abd el-Fattah represents the very best of democratic values and deserves freedom after years of unjust imprisonment by authoritarian regimes. This extraordinary political thinker and humanitarian has been jailed by four consecutive Egyptian governments simply for fighting for justice and democracy. His release should be celebrated as a victory for human rights, not questioned by those who hypocritically support far worse actions elsewhere.

Right narrative

Starmer's gushing welcome of Abd el-Fattah exposes staggering aloofness from everyday British concerns when the prime minister prioritizes an Egyptian activist who called Brits "dogs and monkeys" and advocated killing Zionists. This man's hateful tweets were so extreme he was stripped of a human rights prize nomination in 2014, yet basic due diligence was ignored. The government wastes resources on luxury activism while Britons struggle with the economy and broken borders.
