The American public, however, should be assured that the agency does everything in its power to safeguard the health of its detainees while in custody. ICE achieves this through routine and thorough medical examinations, plus full access to quality medical and emergency care.

Johnny Noviello’s tragic passing is another fatality at the hands of ICE, whose death toll rises as this administration pursues its ardent anti-immigration policies. ICE needs wholesale reform, which includes dismantling the mass detention system as well as fixing key issues with oversight and internal investigations. Otherwise, more innocents will die due to ICE’s brutal methods.
