The government has taken the decisive action necessary to support the Australian people and the economy in the face of President Trump’s unjustified tariffs. Labor’s five-point plan will cushion the impact of America’s return to protectionism, while its measured restraint from implementing retaliatory tariffs will prevent a broader crisis.
The Coalition strongly supports the actions taken by the Labor government in response to the wrongful imposition of tariffs on Australia. It must be reiterated, however, that much of this is a crisis of Labor’s making. Had the prime minister and the government negotiated with the White House sooner, Australia may have avoided these duties altogether.
For too long, trade with Australia has been a one-way street. While America imports $3 billion of Australian beef, they ban imports of American beef altogether. Understandably, Australia wishes to protect its farmers. By imposing these tariffs, the U.S. is merely trying to do the same.
