The Facts

  • An explosion at a gas station in Yemen's Al-Bayda province on Saturday killed 15 people and left at least 67 injured, including 40 critically wounded.

  • The blast took place in the Zaher district of Bayda province — which is currently under the control of Iranian-backed Houthi rebels — and triggered massive fires that damaged over 20 vehicles.

The Spin

Narrative A

This explosion occurred in a strategic area vital to maintaining essential services for local communities, which suggests it was a result of Israeli's incessant attacks on Yemen following the fall of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad last year. However, the Houthis will not bow down as they are committed to strengthening the country's infrastructure and safety standards, as well as the axis of resistance to prevent a new cycle of violence from killing Yemen's people.

Narrative B

Yemen is in flames thanks to Western hypocrisy. Even though the Houthis sabotage free trade and block humanitarian aid for millions of impoverished citizens, the US and its allies sit back and watch the mayhem instead of sanctioning their violence. Washington has become an accomplice in Israel's war crimes; it must seize the opportunity that has come with the fall of Bashar al-Assad in Syria and uproot the Houthis to bring stability to Yemen.
