The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting on Friday to discuss Israeli attacks on Gaza's medical infrastructure. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk called the destruction of hospitals a "human rights catastrophe," with only 16 of Gaza's 36 hospitals partially operational.
Algeria requested the session in response to recent Israeli attacks on the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza. Israel said it raided the hospital to dislodge Hamas fighters disguised as medical personnel and patients.
Israel's war against Hamas is surely just, given the atrocities the group committed during its Oct. 7 attack. However, Israel must take into account the innocent civilians in Gaza who are trapped between Israel's military machine and Hamas' terrorist fighters.
Hamas continues to use Gaza's civilians as human shields as it increasingly converts schools and hospitals into command-and-control centers. The terrorist group is solely to blame for the destruction of Gaza and its impact on its people, as it started this terrible war with the massacres of Oct. 7.
Israel's true goal in northern Gaza is to starve and exterminate the civilian population so that the region is never inhabited by Palestinians again, yet the media continues to ignore its horrifying ambitions. This is a campaign of mass extermination that has received the full backing of the US.
