The Facts

  • US Pres. Donald Trump reaffirmed his intent to take control of the Gaza Strip amid a visit from King Abdullah II of Jordan to the White House on Tuesday.

  • Despite Jordan publicly rejecting the US President's plan to relocate Palestinians from Gaza, Trump stated while sitting next to King Abdullah on Tuesday that the US would not "buy" Gaza, as he previously claimed, but would rather simply "have it."

  • "We don't have to buy, there's nothing to buy," Trump said. "It's a war-torn area, we're going to hold it, we're going to take it… Gaza the way it is, civilization has been wiped out in Gaza. It's going to be a great economic development."

The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

The usual critics are deriding Trump for his out-of-the-box thinking to bring a long-sought solution to the situation in Gaza. However, it's the most humane option available and might for once bring peace to this region of the Middle East.

Pro-Palestine narrative

18 months of war have not dissuaded the Palestinians of Gaza from wanting to remain on their homeland. Trump has no right to tell the people of Gaza where they should live, and his plans to move them would amount to ethnic cleansing and forcible displacement.
