The Facts

  • A suspected 17-year-old shooter, Solomon Henderson, reportedly opened fire in the cafeteria of Antioch High School in Nashville, Tenn., on Wednesday morning, killing Josselin Corea Escalante, 16, and injuring another student before taking his own life.

  • Besides the one fatality and the wounded arm as a result of Henderson's multiple shots fired, a third victim reportedly sustained facial injuries from falling during the incident. Two school resource officers were reportedly present in the building but not near the cafeteria when the shooting occurred.

  • The shooting was partially live-streamed on the platform Kick, which quickly banned the account, removed the video, and is now working to support the police. Henderson reportedly took the bus to school, went into the bathroom, and came out with a handgun.

The Spin

Left narrative

Despite some of the highest rates of gun violence in the nation, including multiple high-profile school shootings, Tennessee has loosened its gun laws and even put guns in the hands of teachers, which certainly hasn't worked. Simple laws like banning open carry and requiring background checks would help save thousands of lives. As the US faces growing online radicalization, there's no reason not to enact common-sense regulations.

Right narrative

Gun control will never work because it ignores moral decay and the root problems. Not too long ago, students regularly brought guns to school to go hunting afterward, yet there were no shootings. Most of today's shooters are mentally ill and seek attention, and they have been known to boost past shooters' rhetoric. The media then riles up the public by fabricating the dangers of guns and blaming it on their favorite bogeyman — the "far-right."
