US rapper Kanye West has deleted his X account after it was deactivated by the platform owner Elon Musk following a series of offensive posts Friday — calling himself a Nazi and praising Adolf Hitler — on the social media platform.
West had a reach of 32M followers on X. His remarks included questioning the validity of antisemitism and intent to "normalize" discourse about Hitler.
Posts by the 47-year-old included statements such as "I don't like or trust no Jewish person" and "Jewish people actually hate white people and use black people." Some posts featured images of actor Oliver Masucci playing Hitler.
X's continued allowance of West's hate speech poses a direct threat to Jewish safety and security, as his massive following amplifies dangerous antisemitic rhetoric that can lead to real-world violence against Jewish communities. Musk must take action to permanently ban West from the platform once and for all.
While West's posts were reprehensible, and a suspension can be justified to protect users, permanent bans on social media undermine the principle of free speech and deny individuals the opportunity for reform. Social media platforms, as modern public squares, must balance accountability with free speech and a chance for redemption.
