The Facts

  • A new poll conducted by Verian this month revealed that 85% of Greenlanders oppose becoming part of the US, while 6% support the idea and 9% remain undecided.

  • This comes as US Pres. Donald Trump has refused to rule out using military force to take control of Greenland, claiming the Arctic territory is essential for US national security and suggesting that Greenlanders "want to be with us."

  • Previously, Denmark responded to Trump's statements by announcing a $2B investment in Arctic security, including three new Arctic ships, long-range drones, and improved satellite capacity for monitoring the region. Greenland is a semi-autonomous Danish territory.

The Spin

Anti-Trump narrative

The US taking over Greenland would violate international law and the territory's right to self-determination. The US can achieve its security objectives through existing partnerships with Greenland and Denmark, while remaining on good terms with NATO allies.

Pro-Trump narrative

Trump knows acquiring Greenland is vital for US national security and economic interests as it would prevent Chinese and Russian influence in the region. It's completely reasonable for him to threaten tariffs on Denmark or other means to make this happen.
