Sam Altman, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ChatGPT-owner OpenAI, has scheduled a closed-door briefing with US government officials in Washington on Jan. 30, amid speculation about breakthrough developments in artificial intelligence (AI) technology, known as agentic AI.
The anticipated AI super-agents are designed to perform complex tasks independently — including writing code, conducting research, and executing multi-step projects with minimal human supervision.
US Pres. Donald Trump has a unique chance to lead AI development with a Manhattan Project approach, focusing on alignment to ensure AI boosts the economy while remaining safe and under US control. With $200B invested in AI just last year, this initiative could harness that investment to align AI with American values, potentially leading to unprecedented economic growth and technological supremacy.
Trump should be wary of letting AI companies dominate the US economy, as there are clear risks, such as stifling competition and innovation or mass layoffs, that the American people are worried about. While an overregulated industry could certainly weaken US competitiveness, economic growth can't be the only factor taken into consideration when AI technology threatens to replace so many human workers. A firm line must be drawn on this issue.
