Federal Judge Lewis Liman found former Donald Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani in civil contempt of court on Monday for failing to properly comply with orders to turn over assets and information related to a $148M defamation judgment.
The contempt ruling stems from a defamation case where Giuliani was found liable in 2023 for falsely accusing two Georgia election workers of ballot tampering during the 2020 presidential election.
The election workers' lawyers assert that Giuliani has failed to properly surrender various assets, including watches, sports memorabilia, a Joe DiMaggio jersey, and documentation for his Manhattan apartment and Mercedes-Benz, adding that he has not turned over "a single dollar from his nonexempt cash accounts."
Giuliani's pattern of non-compliance demonstrates willful defiance of judicial authority. Despite numerous warnings, he has continued to ignore requests to overturn documents and items. The judge is well within his scope to charge Giuliani with contempt of court as he must ensure justice for the defamed election workers who suffered severe harassment due to false accusations.
This case is a politically driven witch-hunt aimed at punishing Giuliani for his association with Pres.-elect Donald Trump. He has done his best to comply with what has been requested from him, and at each turn has faced unfair judgment. Giuliani is being scapegoated by the Democratic elite who are clearly weaponizing the legal system to target him.
