Jan Egeland, the secretary-general of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), on Sunday said that aid for Afghan women was under threat. Identifying funding cuts as the primary threat to support programs, he noted a lack of basic livelihood programming for widows and single mothers.
Egeland has visited Afghanistan multiple times since the Taliban takeover in August 2021, which triggered an immediate halt to foreign aid, leading to widespread poverty and hunger, while sanctions and frozen currency reserves cut off Afghanistan's access to global financial institutions.
The humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan requires immediate international attention and increased funding to prevent further deterioration of women's rights and living conditions. The international community must reconsider current policies to ensure aid reaches those in desperate need.
The Taliban need time to establish appropriate conditions that align with interpretation of Islamic law. As conditions in Afghanistan aren't yet right for resuming women's education and employment, the focus is on working within the current framework while gradually addressing international concerns.
