The Facts

  • Alejandro Arcos, the mayor of Guerrero state capital, Chilpancingo, was found decapitated on Sunday, less than a week into office. His body was discovered inside his pickup truck and his head was left on the roof of the vehicle.

  • No one has claimed responsibility for the murder so far, and authorities have yet to name any suspects. Chilpancingo has long been at the center of turf battles between two local cartels — the Ardillos and the Tlucas.

The Spin

Narrative A

The shocking death of Alejandro Arcos was a tragedy waiting to happen in the crime-ridden city of Chilpancingo, especially after two of his allies were killed. Furthermore, gangs blocked campaigns from entering parts of the capital earlier this year, and at least six candidates were killed in pre-election violence statewide in Guerrero.

Narrative B

While there is indeed a correlation between gang violence and political violence in some Mexican states such as Guerrero, this oversimplification fails to explain how political violence can be high in places where there are relatively low levels of gang-related crimes. Power dynamics and local-level disputes also contribute to this worrisome trend.
