Israel's attorney general, Gali Baharav-Miara, on Thursday ordered police to open an investigation into Sara Netanyahu, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's wife, over allegations she harassed political opponents and a witness in the Israeli leader's corruption trial.
The probe was ordered following a report by Israel's Channel 12 "Uvda" investigative program that appeared to show WhatsApp messages between her and Hanni Bleiweiss, an aide to the Israeli leader who died of cancer in 2023.
Having already been accused of abusive behavior towards staff and using public money to fund her lavish lifestyle, this probe into Sara Netanyahu's actions spells greater trouble for the Netanyahu family. In addition to his charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust, Benjamin Netanyahu also has an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court, which he has to contend with.
While the attorney general ignores criminal wrongdoing by others, he has launched this selective prosecution of the family of ministers for political purposes. His decision to open a criminal investigation based on television gossip makes him unfit for the position, and he ought to be replaced immediately.
