The Vatican's ambassador to Israel, Nuncio Adolpho Tito Yllana, was this week summoned for a meeting with the director general of Israel's Foreign Ministry, Eden Bar-Tal, a source told the Jerusalem Post on Wednesday.
The summons came after Pope Francis twice labelled Israel's ongoing military campaign in Gaza as "cruelty" in as many days.
His first use of the word came Saturday, after medics reported that at least 25 Palestinians — including seven children from one family — were killed in Israeli attacks the previous day. "Yesterday children were bombed. This is cruelty, this is not war," the pope said.
These are disappointing remarks from the pontiff that misrepresent the facts on the ground and single out the Jewish people. It is well known that this war started after Hamas launched terror attacks on Israel and that, in an effort to protect themselves, its operatives hide among the civilian population.
After numerous reports of Israeli snipers targeting children, and many days of air strikes targeting hospitals, tent encampments, and the civilian population — killing upwards of 45K people — the pope was fully justified in using his platform to seek to bring an end to this grave situation.
