The Facts

  • GOP leaders from three House committees have asked Attorney General Merrick Garland to submit transcripts and recordings of Pres. Joe Biden's interviews with special counsel Robert Hur, who documented the former's handling of classified documents during his vice presidency.

  • In a letter on Monday, Reps. James Comer (R-Ky.), Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), and Jason Smith (R-Mo.) — chairmen of House Ways and Means, Judiciary, and Oversight committees respectively — claimed the details of Oct. 8 and Oct. 9 interviews are essential to Biden's impeachment investigation.

The Spin

Republican narrative

America's regrettable two-tiered justice system was fully on display with Robert Hur's decision to forego pressing charges against Pres. Biden due to his apparent cognitive decline. It would be one thing if Biden were retired, but he is a sitting president seeking another term. The media and political establishment can't claim that Biden is too mentally incapacitated to face charges, while also propping him up as their preferred candidate. The DOJ is clearly biased against Trump.

Democratic narrative

Donald Trump and his Republican cronies are doing all they can to spin Robert Hur's report about Pres. Biden, but none of their assertions are true. First, GOP sycophants are exaggerating the extent of Hur's report on Biden's memory to shield Trump from burning questions about his own age and mental sharpness. Secondly, Biden's response to the DOJ's investigation is far different from Trump's defiant approach. If Trump had complied with investigators like Biden did, he wouldn't be facing this current litany of indictments.
