Spain’s Labour Minister and current Second Deputy Prime Minister, Yolanda Díaz, has unveiled a proposal to give every 18-year-old a €20K ($21.8K) “right to start” grant, to be spent on studies, training, or establishing a business.
Díaz, a candidate for PM in the forthcoming snap election on July 23, has stated that her new progressive platform will focus on providing equal opportunities for young people, saying the plan for “universal inheritance” is aimed at addressing inequality among the roughly 8.2M under-18s living in Spain.
Díaz’s plan would guarantee the young people of Spain a future, regardless of their families' social backgrounds or financial limitations. It is a progressive proposal that will bolster her chances ahead of the Spanish elections.
It is crucial that the introduction of such an expensive proposal, oriented around subsidies or aid and with no conditions or restrictions on income level, comes with an explanation of financing. So far, no feasible explanation of how these plans will be paid for has been provided by Díaz's party.
