Liliya Chanysheva, a former campaign leader for jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, was sentenced to seven years and six months in prison on Wednesday on charges of "creating an extremist organization."
This comes as Chanysheva — one of the few high-profile women in the anti-Putin camp — was detained in November 2021, with prosecutors in a court in Ufa, the capital of the central Bashkortostan Republic, requesting a 12-year prison term for her.
As the war against Ukraine rages on, Russia continues to oppress all critics opposed to its unlawful invasion of its neighbor. The Russian state's brutal crackdown upon those who express their displeasure towards Putin's regime must stop now, and there must be greater consequences against Russia as it continues to clamp down on its citizens' fundamental rights.
Russia's non-systemic political opposition continues to engage in terrorism while the West portrays its actions as heroism. Supporters of Navalny and their consequent organizations have pledged their allegiance to violence and waging war on their own people. These criminals will not be met with open discussion but rather brought to immediate justice.
