On Monday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that eight Georgia Republican lawmakers had asked the state's Prosecuting Attorneys Qualification Commission (PAQC) to investigate Fulton County District Attorney (DA) Fani Willis, accusing her of "improperly cherrypick[ing]" cases.
The senators allege that Willis chose to prioritize cases that "align with her political party's interests" over those that demanded attention, citing 10 inmates who have died in Fulton County custody in the last year. However, they didn't specifically mention her case against former Pres. Donald Trump.
Previous social media posts by Fani Willis highlight that her goal when running for office was to help block Trump from ever being elected again and show that she regularly challenged election proceedings. The questioning of electoral results shouldn't merely be the privilege of Democrats when they believe they are losing. If Willis truly believes in the legitimacy of the Fulton County case, then she herself should be scrutinized.
The law establishing the PAQC was enacted as part of a broader effort to target and penalize so-called rogue prosecutors who aren't aligned with the GOP's ideas — an assault that undermines the legitimacy of America's institutions and democracy. The accusations against Willis hold no weight and yet are unsurprising given the current state of the Republican party.
