Britain is reportedly considering providing some Challenger 2 tanks to Kyiv, with Ukrainian officials hoping that the move could further help encourage Germany to supply its Leopard 2 battle tanks later this month.
Unnamed sources confirmed to Sky News on Monday that discussions over delivering ten Challenger 2 tanks to Kyiv have been in place "for some weeks." Britain has committed to match or exceed last year's $2.8B in military aid for Ukraine in 2023.
Facing an existential threat like Britain did in 1941, Ukraine needs help to drive out the Russian invaders. Decisions on stepping up military assistance need to be made now if the West is serious about supporting Kyiv, including the delivery of battle tanks to ensure the defeat of Russia. Ukraine's transition to NATO-standard equipment will be key to finishing off Putin.
Even if the UK sends Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine, they are unlikely to be effective. The complicated and lengthy crew training required before the vehicles can be properly deployed in battle makes their utilization difficult, while Soviet- and Russian-made tanks can be used without extra training and with no lack of spare parts.
