At last nine people, including four minors, were injured on Memorial Day in a shooting on the Hollywood, Fla., Oceanfront Broadwalk. All the victims were in stable condition on Tuesday morning.
They were transported to Memorial Regional Hospital and Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital after receiving aid at the scene. One person was in surgery late Monday, according to the Hollywood Police Dept. spokesperson Deanna Bettineschi.
There is seemingly no end to the string of mass shootings in the US, which has witnessed more than 250 this year alone. And no place seems to be off limits, as this beachside venue has joined schools, grocery stores, and other public places that have been the site of violence because of unfettered access to guns around much of the country. Something must be done to reduce the availability of weapons.
This unfortunate incident has nothing to do with Second Amendment rights, as it was the result of an altercation between two groups of people, some of whom were criminals with no respect for life or for the bystanders they injured. This calls for a crackdown on criminals, not on the lawful possession of guns by responsible citizens.
