A report released on Fri. recommends that the UK temporarily take back direct rule of the British Virgin Islands (BVI) amid alleged failures in government.
The report concludes a 2021 UK-appointed commission of inquiry which found widespread abuse, including millions of state funds spent without proper process.
While the report raises valid concerns, the recommendations must be viewed with an objective eye. Suspending the BVI's constitution isn't in the best interest of the island's citizens, and will be a step back for its democracy. There are other methods that should be considered first.
The report doesn't make its recommendations lightly. The only way to tackle the confirmed failures of government is to move forward with the BVI's suspension of powers. Without drastic measures, the current situation will go on indefinitely.
