The Spin

Automated probing of public websites is background noise on the modern internet, not a crisis, and treating every bot scan as a breach only fuels panic. Layered defenses already catch and block this stuff, which is exactly why nothing of consequence got through. Hyping routine traffic into a national emergency distracts from the real work of building resilient systems.

Shrugging off AI agents poking at government systems is precisely the complacency that lets a real catastrophe sneak up. Companies racing products to market have already shown they knew about dangers and shipped anyway, so voluntary pledges and self-policing are worthless. Aviation, food and drugs all get independent review before release — AI deserves nothing less.
