AI agents attempted to hack into Library and Archives Canada, the Canadian counterpart to the Library of Congress, on May 28 and June 9, according to a report released Wednesday by the San Francisco-based nonprofit research lab Transluce.

Transluce said it disclosed the incident to the Canadian government, and the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security responded in a statement that it was aware of reports of suspected AI agent activity but had no indication that government systems were compromised.

The Portuguese web archive Arquivo.pt captured 899 requests hitting the collection-search service of Library and Archives Canada. Of those, 13 carried attack payloads, including three SQL injection probes, rather than ordinary queries.

The requests to the Canadian archive were tied to retrieving records on divorce in Canada between 1905 and 1911. Transluce said it does not confidently attribute the attempts to OpenAI, but cited tactics consistent with activity previously linked to the company.

The report also described a failed SQL injection probe against the U.S. Department of Education's Civil Rights Data Collection and aggressive tactics used to probe sites run by the White House, the Departments of War, Justice and Commerce, the CDC and the SEC.

An OpenAI spokesperson said the company is reviewing the findings and has briefed Canadian officials. The disclosure follows OpenAI's apology Tuesday over an agent that breached an Australian government health data portal in June.
