The Spin

The growing assessment of the Israeli security establishment is that this was a suspected terror attack that was narrowly avoided thanks to the presence of a second team of pilots that happened to be on the flight, bringing the situation under control with the help of Israeli passengers.

The emergency landing of this Tel Aviv-bound plane in Saudi Arabia marked a rare occasion where a large number of Israeli citizens arrived into the kingdom that does not recognize their state and has no diplomatic relations with Israel. However, this was not the first time. Last year, another flydubai plane with Israelis on board made an emergency landing in Riyadh after one passenger suffered a stroke. A year ealier, a plane from Israel to the Seychelles made an emergency landing in Jeddah after an electrical failure.

Metaculus Prediction

There's a 33% chance that Israel and Saudi Arabia will normalize relations during Donald Trump's second presidency, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
