Claude Discovers CRISPR-Like Enzyme System

Did Claude just uncover biology nobody knew to look for or is this routine gene mining dressed up as a breakthrough?

The Spin

Claude just found a molecular machine nobody knew existed by simply reading the literature and genome data before proposing the experiments that confirmed it. AI went from struggling with high school math to cracking open problems in a few years, and biology is on the exact same curve. This is but one example of the extraordinary potential AI holds to change our understanding of the world.

Spotting an odd gene cluster next to a repeat array is the easy part, and genome-neighborhood mining has been doing it for decades with mature, published pipelines. The hard work is proving what a system actually does, and there's no evidence yet of any programmable properties that would justify the CRISPR comparison. Hyping incremental findings as a major discovery cheapens the real breakthrough when it finally arrives.

Metaculus Prediction

There is an 18% chance that it will be considered best practice in clinical psychology to incorporate AI tools in the diagnostic process by Dec. 31, 2028, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
