Booting CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House because the coverage stung is textbook retaliation, and the Constitution doesn't allow it. Court precedent demands clear standards, written notice and a chance to respond before a press pass disappears — none of that happened here. Whoever holds power next could use this same weapon against conservative outlets.
The First Amendment guarantees the right to publish, not a hard pass, a briefing room seat or a spot in the pool. Democratic administrations froze out Fox News, blocked the New York Post and seized Associated Press phone records, and the outrage machine stayed quiet. Access has always been a privilege, and no president is obligated to host a hostile operation on the grounds.
