A 16-year-old girl was stabbed to death in a school, toilet and nobody is being held accountable for it. A grieving single mother lost the most precious thing in her life and walked out of court with an acquittal instead of justice. The prosecution should hear the family out and pursue every avenue left, because a killing this brutal deserves more than a hospital stay.
The boy's story is also tragic. His acquittal was not a declaration that the death did not matter, nor did it mean freedom. Instead, he remains detained indefinitely for psychiatric treatment. His case highlights the difficult balance between accountability, mental illness, rehabilitation and protecting society.
