Did a violent storm sink this Indonesian ferry or did lax safety enforcement make the disaster inevitable?

The Spin

Bad weather sank this ferry, and the priority right now is pulling people out of the water, not pointing fingers. Rescuers are battling waves up to 2.5 meters that put even a 40-meter rescue vessel at risk — 280over 600 personnel plus ships and ahelicopters helicopter are out there doing dangerous work,.

Storms don't explain why Indonesia keeps experiencing deadly accidents. Overloading, unreliable passenger manifests, aging secondhand hulls and lax enforcement turn every rough patch of sea into a mass-casualty event, and this capsizing is the fourth major ferry disaster in months. Until safety standards are actually enforced, the next tragedy is inevitable.
