The Spin

Bad weather sank this ferry, and the priority right now is pulling people out of the water, not pointing fingers. Rescuers are battling waves up to 2.5 meters that put even a 40-meter rescue vessel at risk, and 280 personnel plus ships and a helicopter are out there doing dangerous work. Blame the storm and honor the crews racing against it.

Storms don't explain why Indonesia keeps losing ferries full of people. Overloading, unreliable passenger manifests, aging secondhand hulls and lax enforcement turn every rough patch of sea into a mass-casualty event, and this capsizing is the fourth major ferry disaster in months. Until safety standards are actually enforced, the next tragedy is already scheduled.
