The Spin

A WhatsApp tip about Facebook chatter is not a forecast that 72,000 people would cross in two days, and no intelligence document predicted anything close to that scale. The government declassified 40 files because it has nothing to hide, and no credible evidence shows Morocco orchestrated it. Treason talk is being fueled by hoax networks inventing epidemics and invasions. Spain will work with the E.U. to strengthen border management through coordinated European action.

The spy agency flagged the assault a day ahead, naming the date, hour and 180,000 followers being whipped up online, so claiming nobody saw it coming does not hold. More than 72,000 people stormed Ceuta, over 140 died and thousands remain camped on the beaches of a city of 84,000. Turning to the E.U. for help only underscores the government's failure. Refusing to name Morocco's role while shifting responsibility for the border collapse to Europe is a betrayal of Spain.

Europe's response to Ceuta exposes more than the failure of outsourcing border control to Morocco. Washington and Israel were already at odds with Sánchez, and suspicions that Madrid was being punished while Rabat weaponized migration cannot be brushed aside. Brussels' muted response reinforces the impression that Spain was left exposed by its supposed allies. An EUE.U. unable to defend a member state against geopolitical pressure leaves ordinary Spaniards paying the price.
