The Spin

The reading collapse started long before lockdowns or smartphones, so blaming screens is a dodge. Decades of teaching reading as a bag of generic skills — skim, scan, find the main idea — trained kids to treat texts as interchangeable substrate, and the result is a generation of hasty readers guessing their way through. England's phonics and knowledge-rich reforms held the line while neighbors slid, which shows content and sustained reading matter more than strategy drills.

Kids are drowning in digital distraction while adults hand them chatbots instead of teachers. Students who skip AI for schoolwork outscore those who lean on it, more than one in four report classmates distracted by devices in most science lessons and four in ten sit in schools where principals say missing staff hinders instruction. Fully funded public schools with small classes and well-supported teachers, not another gadget, are what reverse this slide.
