It came after the officials — Dan Jukes, a senior aide to party leader Nigel Farage, and James Orr, the party's policy head — were filmed in an undercover report that aired Thursday in which they appeared to discuss ways of circumventing donation laws to accept contributions from a U.S. backer.

In the report, created by investigative outfit Verbatim and broadcast on Channel 4 News, a journalist posed as the U.K.-based son of a wealthy U.S. businessman. As a means of avoiding direct donations from the fictional pair, Jukes and Orr can be seen arranging for them to pay for three polls commissioned by the party costing £32,500 ($43,976).

After the report aired, Reform denied wrongdoing and alleged it was subject to "a hoax perpetuated by foreign-funded, climate change activists posing as would-be party donors." Meanwhile, opposing parties reported the matter to the police and the Electoral Commission.

While the Reform contractors said things they shouldn't have and have been released, it is clear they were entrapped by this operation. Nonetheless, the party has done nothing illegal and its financing is all legitimate.
