USU.S. sanctions on Cuba are collective punishment dressed up as accountability — the embargo was literally designed in 1960 to cause hunger and desperation among ordinary Cubans. The latest designations are producing 20-hour blackouts, hospitals without power and delayed pediatric surgeries. Calling that "holding elites accountable" while civilians lose medical care is textbook economic warfare against a civilian population.

Cuba's communist regime has turned the island into a failed state where the Castro family profits through sanctions evasion and illicit schemes while ordinary Cubans go hungry. Designating Fidel Ernesto Castro Calis and key entities in the Castro financial and intelligence network is exactly the kind of targeted accountability that corrupt insiders deserve. The Castro family must face justice for decades of crimes against the Cuban people.
