The Spin

Nepal's flood disaster has exposed a glaring failure in emergency response — rescue efforts for over 900 hydropower workers trapped in tunnels didn't begin in earnest until more than a day after the catastrophe struck. The rugged terrain and lack of resources have stalled the second phase of relief entirely, while losses exceed $4 billion. Faster, more methodical action could have saved lives that were simply left to slip away.

Nepal's flood response has been a genuine all-hands effort, with army teams, foreign specialists from India and China, and international aid pouring in to tackle an almost impossible rescue across brutally damaged terrain. The harder truth is that $124 billion worth of Nepal's infrastructure sits exposed to climate-driven disasters, and rebuilding smarter — not just faster — is the real challenge ahead.
